Forgotten Years

We will remember.

Get It

Try It

It's rather intimidating really: all those robots marching in stride, followed by staggering military hardware. And it serves to remember that all those people, and all that hardware, have but one purpose: to kill.

And you look at the extent and expanse of manufacture and underlying research and you realise how much blasted cash has been wasted designing and building all those 'toys for boys'.

Thousands line the streets near the Kremlin - who doesn't love a parade? And old Vladimir up there, standing, and standing, and standing... For how many hours?

This isn't the world we dreamed of, this isn't the world we wanted.

But wait.

Think back 69 years to this very day. When Nazi Germany finally capitulated. The greatest disaster in a stupid fucking human history littered with such disasters was finally at an end. The US lost something like 418 thousand in that war, known there as 'World War Two'. Russia lost nearly THIRTY MILLION, and over there it's known as 'The Great Patriotic War'. For an obvious reason.

What's so funny is how the war hawks and the MIC in the US formed NATO as a future defence against the 'Russian threat'. Russia had no one with which to march west! But of course NATO wasn't defensive at all. And the Warsaw pact was only formed six years after NATO, to truly defend against NATO. But they didn't have much defence to speak of.

Thirty million. 30,000,000. There are people still alive who remember. There are also so many - chalk it up to poor education - who don't. And as those who don't know history can be doomed to repeat it...

Few of the sins of the father
Are visited upon the son
Hearts have been hard
Hands have been clenched into fists too long

Our sons need never be soldiers
Our daughters will never need guns
These are the years between
These are the years that were hard fought and won

Contracts torn at the edges
Old signatures stained with tears
Seasons of war and peace
These should not be forgotten years

Still it aches like tetanus
It reeks of politics
How many dreams remain
This is a feeling too strong to contain

The hardest years, the darkest years
The roaring years, the fallen years
These should not be forgotten years
The hardest years, the wildest years
The desperate and divided years
We will remember
Our shoreline was never invaded
Our country was never in flames
This is the calm we breathe
This is a feeling too strong to contain

Still it aches like tetanus
It reeks of politics
Signatures stained with tears
Who can remember
We've got to remember

The hardest years, the darkest years
The roaring years, the fallen years
These should not be forgotten years

The hardest years, the wildest years
The desperate and divided years
We will remember

Forsaken aching breaking years
The time and tested heartbreak years
These should not be forgotten years

The blinded years, the binding years
The desperate and divided years
These should not be forgotten years
