Xfile for OS X: A Finder Killer Arrives
28 February 2003 marked the unveiling of the first 'alpha' release of Xfile, a 'Finder Killer' from Rixstep. It was previewed to select subscribers and on 2 March 2003 was made available to the public.
Xfile is a document-based Cocoa application that uses Unix rather than Carbon to achieve robustness and speed. It is many times faster than the Finder, offers all the Unix features the Finder lacks, yet is less than one one hundreth its size.
More information on Xfile is available in the AppleCore Project Gallery.
