Apple & Catch-22

Cheaper and faster everything. Gates trumped?

MOSCONE (Rixstep) -- Apple are doing their best to preempt Microsoft at everything. Their new OS (Snow Leopard) will not only be available a month earlier than Microsoft's 'systeme terrible' Windows Se7en but will also be cheaper: a mere $29 for the upgrade from the current version 10.5.

A new line of laptops features a 15-inch MacBook Pro with a seven-hour battery for a paltry $1699.

A quick check of prices at international stores shows the laptops are approximately 35% more expensive outside the US. That can't be right.

The basic 15-inch MBP comes with a 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, a 250GB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, and the seven-hour battery. There's also a new 13-inch MBP line starting at $1199.

Snow Leopard Mac OS X 10.6 will only run on Intel Macs. Windows Se7en will infect anything.
