The Many Faces of Massi Fritz

Sleight of hand for the international media?

STOCKHOLM/LONDON (Rixstep) — The new plaintiff counsel for Sofia Linnea Wilén (previously assumed by the international media to be the new plaintiff counsel for Anna Ardin) is making the rounds. Elisabeth Massi Fritz has been identified as the personal lawyer of Swedish prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt; she's also suspected of illicitly using the services of outsourced help to doctor her statements to the media.

On or around 21 May, Massi Fritz began a media blitz to pressure Ecuador to render Julian Assange to Sweden. She began with one press release for the local Swedish media; then she had this document altered by outside help before sending it outside the duckpond.

The initial version for the Swedish media was almost ethical and kind by Massi Fritz standards; the second of the two statements, penned by one Anna Sjögren and sent to the international media, was downright nasty.

What's worse, Massi Fritz seems to have done a 'switcheroo' on the two, identifying the copy as original and vice versa.

Following are the two versions side by side in the original Swedish, the supposed original on the left.

The final three paragraphs of the two versions are nearly identical, save for two words removed for the second version. All other differences are in the beginning - two paragraphs in the first version and three in the second version.

What has changed? And why?

What a Difference a Day Makes

A rush translation:

Assange case - we demand stronger measures

My client has the right to her day in court for the rape perpetrated on her. It is a rape that has left deep scars and meant a serious violation of her personal integrity. The violation has been especially serious and the psychological symptoms are there every day. Assange's behaviour in this case exacerbates the suffering of my client

Speculations in the media have been many and directly erroneous, this preliminary investigation is about suspicion of rape for the part concerning my client and not a form of conspiracy. My client is both a plaintiff and a crime victim just as many others I represent on a daily basis.

The preliminary investigation in Sweden must be carried out in a customary way according to our Swedish judicial system even if the name of the suspect should be Assange.
Assange case - lawyer demands stronger measures

My client has the right to her day in court for the rape she's reported to the police and for which Assange is today suspected of. She has the right as a plaintiff to have her case tried in a customary way in accordance with the Swedish judicial system.

The rape Assange is suspected of has left deep scars and meant a serious violation of her personal integrity. The violation is especially serious and the psychological symptoms are there every day. Assange's behaviour and prolonging of the preliminary investigation in this case exacerbate the suffering of my client when the preliminary investigation does not move forward. The wait is long and the suffering great.

Speculations in the media have been many and directly erroneous. This preliminary investigation is about suspicion of rape for the part concerning my client. There is no form of conspiracy as has been claimed by the media. My client is both a plaintiff and a crime victim just as many others I represent daily in numerous cases. Her rights as a plaintiff shall not be forgotten in the process.

What Difference Does It Make?

It should be noted that the original 'international edition' first dated '22 May' has since been backdated to '21 May'. But what has appeared to be the second edition (for the international audience) is actually the first and vice versa.

Further, the suspect document wasn't created on 21 May or even on 22 May but on 4 June. Clearly something isn't right.

The document is attributed not to Massi Fritz but to one Anna Sjögren. And all the metadata would seem to be courtesy Microsoft, the same type of metadata that got the author of the Melissa worm outed, along with various Microsoft PR bureaux.

Passepartout of the Flashback forum immediately cites the website of the Swedish bar association.

From a document on 'guidelines for judicial ethics':

'It should be clear when work is performed by an assistant jurist for the firm. So external documents signed by the assistant jurist should be rendered on the stationery of the firm and the assistant jurist shall only use business cards for the firm.'

Trenterx points out that only one version states that Wilén filed a complaint. As this version, originally dated 22 May, is now thought to be the original, it follows that perhaps Wilén herself wanted this removed.

Trenterx goes on to point out other key differences.

  1. The version Massi Fritz now offers at her website lacks an important section, namely the text 'the rape she reported to the police'. This should be significant. For who reported to the police?
  2. The first version had two references to the preliminary investigation proceeding slowly. Massi Fritz wrote about 'Assange's behaviour and prolonging of the investigation'. Removing this was evidently in a moment of insight, as it's the Swedes who are prolonging matters.
  3. The first version ends with 'carried out swiftly and in a customary way' but the second version removes 'swiftly'. So no one's in a hurry anymore?
  4. Assange's name isn't used as often in the second version. The second version has had more work done on it. The paragraph about Ecuador is the same in both versions.

Duqu adds the following.

'The first version which came to our attention through the Swedish media was dated 22 May. But the version at the website of Massi Fritz is dated 21 May, so she's sent out two completely different versions, depending on the addressee. So that means the rumours were true, and it'll be amusing to see SW tackle this gaffe by her new plaintiff counsel. The first version gave the invoices of Massi Fritz a sugar coating, the second was copypasta, now all we need is Marjasiin in a miniskirt in an upscale stairwell. Talk about a calamity!'
