The Bildt Files
Or what makes a Danish blueblood betray his new country.
On 2 February 2012, Rolling Stone published a Julian Assange interview with Michael Hastings (RIP). Page 6 of the extensive interview contains the following exchange. (Bildt was actually several months shy of being 24 at the time of his first contacts with Strandvägen.)
This caused quite a stir in the Swedish duckpond, with Carl Bildt naturally going ballistic, and sleaze tabloid Expressen recruited to function as attack mutt. Allegations were tossed over the barricades by the crew of Thomas Mattsson, all of them false.
It would take several months for the world to see that, as per usual, Assange got it right and knew what he was talking about. The 'Kissinger Cables', published as part of the WikiLeaks Public Library of US Diplomacy, contained a number of savoury despatches from the US embassy in Stockholm, including the following.
EMBASSY STRONGLY RECOMMENDS DEPARTMENT APPROVAL BILDT NOMINATION. PREFERRED DATES OF TRAVEL IN THE UNITED STATES: APRIL 20 - MAY 20.
The reason for the laudatory appraisal is Bildt had applied to the 'International Visitors' programme, which was a covert CIA scheme for bringing in like-minded to the fold. The very fact that Bildt had been awarded an IV grant meant he had been fully approved by the CIA, thereby giving the embassy a green light.
Bildt flew to the US on his IV grant in August 1973. Pan Am lost his luggage.
PAN AM ADVISES THAT BILDT'S PERSONAL EFFECTS WERE SHIPPED ON PA 76 AUGUST 10. PAN AM REGRETS THE DELAY. PLEASE ADVISE IF SHIPMENT STILL NOT RECEIVED. ROGERS
Carl Bildt approached the US embassy in Stockholm again in April 1975.
MISSION APPROACHED BY CARL BILDT, FORMER IV GRANTEE, AND CHAIRMAN EUROPEAN DEMOCRATIC STUDENTS (FORMERLY ECCS) FOR HELP IDENTIFYING YOUNG REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS, ONE OR TWO EACH, TO BE INVITED TO ORGANIZATION'S SUMMER CONFERENCE IN HELSINKI JUNE 28 TO JULY 3. APPRECIATE YOUR CONTACTING SPENCER OLIVER, PERHAPS OTHERS, FOR SUGGESTIONS.
This was the first move in what would become Bildt's attempt to make contact with Karl Rove. The organisers of the conference didn't have a clue what was going on, as Bildt hadn't contacted them and told them anything of his 'co-opt'.
FINNISH ORGANIZERS EUROPEAN DEMOCATIC STUDENTS CONFERENCE UNAWARE BILDT REQUESTED STOCKHOLM'S ASSISTANCE ARANGING U.S. PARTICPATION.
Bildt makes his next move a month later.
BILDT INFORMED US THAT EUROPEAN DEMOCRATIC STUDENTS MAINLY INTERESTED IN FURTHERING INSTITUTIONAL TIES WITH YOUNG REPUBLICAN/YOUNG DEMOCRAT ORGANIZATIONS. THEREFORE, EDS PREFER THAT AMERICAN REPRESENTATIVES AT HELSINKI CONFERENCE COME FROM HIERARCHY OF THESE ORGANIZATIONS, AND BE PERSONS WHO WILL BE INVOLVED IN YR/YD FOR AT LEAST SEVERAL YEARS. BILDT ALREADY IN CORRESPONDENCE WITH KARL ROVE, CHAIRMAN, COLLEGE REPUBLICANS OF REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE.
Bildt now specifies he wants Rove.
CHAIRMAN CARL BILDT GRATEFUL FOR DEPARTMENT SUPPORT AND CORDINALLY INVITES ROVE AND MCDONOUGH TO ATTEND. FORMAL INVITATIONS EXTENDED VIA AIRMAIL ASAP.
And finally it's time for Bildt to visit Washington again. This visit to the US embassy in Stockholm sets up Bildt's CIA connection (Canney) which he will use a year later when sneaking from the closed door governmental sessions over to Strandvägen.
1 CARL BILDT, CHAIRMAN OF THE EUROPEAN UNION OF CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATIC AND CONSERVATIVE STUDENTS, AND PERSONAL AIDE TO MODERATE (CONSERVATIVE) PARTY CHAIRMAN GOSTA BOHMAN, WILL BE IN WASHINGTON SEPT. 26-27 TO ATTEND THE U.S. YOUTH COUNCIL MEETING, BEING HELD IN COOPERATION WITH THE NATIONAL STRATEGY INFORMATION CENTER. BILDT WILL PARTICIPATE IN A PANEL DISCUSSION OF U.S.-EUROPEAN RELATIONS.
2. FOLLOWING THE CONCLUSION OF THE MEETING, BILDT PLANS TO REMAIN IN WASHINGTON AN ADDITIONAL TWO TO THREE DAYS. HE HAS REQUESTED EMBASSY ASSISTANCE IN ARRANGING FOR HIM TO MEET WITH STATE DEPARTMENT OFFICIALS DEALING WITH SOVIET POLICY TOWARDS EUROPE AND PARTICULARLY TOWARDS SPAIN AND PORTUGAL. EMBASSY WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF APPROPRIATE APPOINTMENTS COULD BE MADE FOR BILDT, WHO IS PARTY'S "EXPERT" ON PORTUGAL. HE WAS IN OPORTO LAST JANUARY AS DELEGATE TO CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATIC (CDS) CONGRESS WHEN LEFTIST DEMONSTRATORS BESEIGED MEETING HALL.
3. WE HAVE SUGGESTED BILDT CONTACT PAUL CANNEY, EUR/NE FOR ASSISTANCE ON THE APPOINTMENTS.
So Julian Assange indeed knew what he was talking about - his claim that Bildt is a spy was backed up by the cables WikiLeaks would release less than half a year later. (Current estimates are that the PlusD project was 18 months in preparation, so Assange had indeed seen the cables and hadn't just 'lucked out'.)
Some time prior to the PlusD release, Swedish Aftonbladet were given access to the cables pertaining to their blueblood MFA Carl Bildt. Johannes Wahlström and Julian Assange can be seen pouring over cables concerning Bildt in the road movie Mediastan.
Beginning on 15 March 2013, Johannes Wahlström and Josefin Sköld, with occasional op-ed help from Lena Mellin and Aftonbladet's chief Jan Helin, began publishing a barrage of articles about the Bildt Files. Their articles included a direct confrontation with the nobleman himself.
(Josefin can be seen on the left, and Johannes can be seen as a blur even farther to the left. No pun intended.)
Josefin and Johannes really did their homework, researching the cables and all names within, finding the hidden connections, etc - reminiscent of what Assange said he once foolishly hoped the MSM would do with raw data.
To say these articles caused high waves in the Swedish duckpond would be an understatement, but Julian Assange's prediction that Bildt would leave office proved to be incorrect. The slippery politician Göran Persson likened to a bar of soap - impossible to grab onto - eluded public outrage once again.
But the question is whether Nils Daniel Carl Bildt can last until the national elections in September, with an increasing number of critics, both domestic and abroad. Dag Hammarskjöld is revered; so is Raoul Wallenberg; but when last has a minister for foreign affairs been declared persona non grata in not one but several sovereign countries?
This article series brings English language readers up to speed on developments in the duckpond about Carl Bildt. Sweden's national elections are in September of this year. Carl Bildt was appointed to his post by the right-wing prime minister. The social democrat/green alliance are now polling 15.9% ahead of the Bildt block, with the gap widening all the time.
Should the trend continue, Carl Bildt will be out of a job in a few months, and the world can collectively sigh with relief. But as long as Bildt is still active in any public capacity, he will remain a threat, political office or no.
