Vienna 2.2.2

Open Community (Steve Palmer)
Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆

Steve Palmer's worked very hard to make a free and open news reader for OS X and he's done a brilliant job. He's been meticulous in his work - and it's been to put it mildly a lot of work.

If you need a good news reader you really need to click this link.

It's Free — and Open

Now that Net News Wire is also free there might seem to be less reason to opt for something like Vienna. But that would be a big mistake.

For the complete source to Vienna is available for you to download, tinker with - perhaps even help improve. It's your news reader too.

And if you're so inclined you can 'mod' your copy and tweak it to your heart's desire.

Right out of the box Vienna compiles cleanly and without a hassle. It's a huge project but if you take the time to get into it you'll find things you want to change.

Staff at Rixstep have a modded copy currently with an 800 KB binary and a total footprint of only 1.5 MB.

Compare that with the ~30 MB NNW currently asks you for.

And Vienna won't trip up on RSS syntax the way that other reader will - you'll never find yourself in a situation where you can see the source to a feed but can't get your reader to render it.

Download Vienna today. Right now. It's everyone's news reader. Make it yours too.
