The Last of the Tygars

The final release before Leopard.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rixstep have proudly announced the immediate release of version 1.8.1 of both the ACP and Xfile. These are 'the last of the tygars' - the last releases for Mac OS X prior to the adoption of 10.5 Leopard.

Both products are updated and compatible with both 10.4 Tiger and 10.5 Leopard. Legacy builds for 10.3 Panther and 10.2 Jaguar remain.

Several new applications have been added to the ACP including GDE for finding data hidden down below ordinary file system interfaces and Xattr for manipulating extended file system attributes.

Even the free Xfile Test Drive and the free ACP Web Services have been updated for this release.

1.8.1 is the final planned release before 10.5 Leopard.

What's New

Xfile - as all applications in the ACP - now flags all possible file system extended attributes, even 'Finder info'. These allocations are automatically added to the total sizes of all file system items.

Both Xfile, Xfind, and Xscan will 'flag' items with extended attributes (even when it's only Finder info) by displaying them in an alternate colour. The ACP file info sheet displays the sizes of the data stream and the extended attribute streams as well as the total aggregate size.

Xstrings now searches all possible extended attribute streams in addition to data streams.

The ACP framework now supports arbitrary extended attributes for all ACP applications; this feature can be used to achieve per document user settings.

The Standard Setter

Xfile from Rixstep - called 'supercharged' and 'überfast' by the media - is simultaneously the only file manager for Mac OS X capable of seamlessly handling all file systems - fdesc, HFS+, HFS+ case-sensitive, UFS, volfs, ZFS. It is the only file manager capable of accessing all areas of the Mac OS X file system and allowing configuration of arcane system data.

And Xfile is not only compatible with Leopard - it already runs on it. Click here.

Xfile manages 'file flags' (user and system append, immutable, etc); 'sticky bits'; set user and group ID bits; it displays major and minor device numbers, inodes (CNIDs), number of links, blocks used, optimal block sizes, and file generation numbers for the superuser; it creates both hard and symbolic links.

Xfile is not only the fastest file manager - it's also the only 100% complete file manager for Mac OS X.

Part of the ACP

Xfile is part of the ACP - Rixstep's 'Apple Core Project', a research project into viable means to hone and optimise generic application development on OS X for professional purposes. The ACP is intended for the professional audience but extreme power users can also find benefit.
