In a move some pundits found surprising Apple today announced new 8-core servers. Both the 'Mac Pro' and the 'Xserve' will now sport new quad core Intel Xeon 'Harpertown' processors - two to a box.

Apple are promising double the performance over earlier models.

Based on Intel's new 45 nanometre architecture the units can achieve a speed of up to 3.2 Ghz.

Prices start at $2799 for the Mac Pro and $2999 for the Xserve.
