Sierra Notes 24/9

Really random stuff.

Get It

Try It

1. The install's painless. Super sexy boot screen.

2. There was a rumour that .DS_Store was finally gone.

That's a bug that's persisted for nineteen years now.

3. 'man3' doesn't come default. You need Xcode for that. Sure, it's mostly programmer stuff, but is that the real reason?

12324 files in Finder can't be fun. Particularly when the file system itself is slower by a factor of several 100%.

4. Speaking of file system jollies. The 'container' thing is getting out of hand. 2286 items on install.

$ ls -al ~/Library/Containers
total 0

5. It's necessary to dig into LaunchAgents, but of course that's verboten. Apple have more security than Murray Hill. (How did those dudes at the lab last so long?)

csrutil disable

That on a reboot with ⌘R. Do your dirty, reboot, put the chastity belt back on again.

6. Features that departed with the exit of lickable images. You can't hover over outline view nodes on a drag to get them to expand. That's bad. That's very very bad.

7. The screw-ups in the tableview are still there. How many years running is that now? Since 10.6? That's a while ago. Jony must love the table column headers, but they knock everything out of whack.

8. The error in the screenshot formatting string is still there too. Or do they really want that final space?

' .png'

The login window takes screenshots too, but it doesn't have the same error. Now isn't that strange.

9. Open a document window or two, any app at all, zoom one of them, edit it and leave it unsaved, then go to the other window and try to exit. Vroom vroom!

10. A new look at an old Apple security talk gives pause for thought. How terrified are they? For years they told us OS X was so secure (and it was) and Windows was so leaky (and it is) and we saw all those Mac vs PC ads (and they were really good) and now suddenly we're supposed to be terrified again?

There's elegance in simplicity, they say. This is the opposite of simple. What's the opposite of elegant?

11. You can make file tags of your own. That's great. Is there any way to search for them?

12. The FreeBSD people deliver a new wheel, and the first thing they do in Cupertino is reinvent it. Makes no sense.

13. @s_titgemeyer just tweeted this, asks if iTunes eats RAM for breakfast. (The app was gobbling 61.96 GB VM.)

14. Going to use iCloud? What's Apple's relationship with PRISM?

15. Code-signing rearing its head again.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/37830758/code-signing-error-whenever-i-try-replacing-stock-files-in-new-scenekit-applicat/39373807

16. Overall it's fun, it's exciting, it's promising, but things have to get simpler again.

17. Xfile repackaged for Sierra. All your .DS_Store are belong to us.
